Q.How do you choose the artists to play for FABNights?
A. We try to book artists that we know and like first and foremost. We all go to gigs and festivals and try to see new acts to us, as well as the tried and tested favourites.
So for example, many of the artists we have booked - eg Kellie While, Ken Nicol, Joe Broughton - are ex-Albion Band members. Other artists, we have seen supporting a bigger name than we could afford - eg: We first heard Johnny Dickinson at the Queen Elizabeth Hall supporting Tommy Emmanuel - a FAB Nights Team Favourite!
We also get sent CD's by up and coming artists who want to come and play support for us. We like to give new talent a chance, so some of the artists you see playing support have approached us. Other ways we get to hear of artists: Audience members recommend people they have enjoyed; Music Agencies contact us and suggest artists that might like to play or who they think would fit well at our sort of venue; artists sometimes recommend other musicians.
Q. What's your worst moment?
A. Generally, having booked a well known artist - and seeing ten people in the audience - and once, a gig for which we had many advanced bookings, had to cancel two hours before the gig! Thankfully, such moments have been rare!
Q Why FAB Nights?
A. Our original strap line was Folk, Acoustic and Blues.(FAB) We were advised to drop the Folk in favour of the more trendy Roots and then changed the strap line with a nod in the direction of Davey Graham's seminal album Folk Blues and Beyond - one of the things I have in common with Phil Beer (!?) is that this was the album that moved me from sixties pop into another direction altogether, and made me the folk/blues/rock fan I am today! So now we are FAB Nights Promotions - Roots, Acoustic, Blues ....and beyond! |
